The basic layout includes a map viewer and a set of functions on the left panel. The map viewer area can be clicked and dragged to change its location, and can be zoomed by double clicking. Left double click zooms in; right double click zooms out. More detailed navigation instructions are available at Google Help.
Search
You can search for any place name in Alaska using this input box. By default, it only matches full words (for instance, if a search was performed for the word cave, Cave Rock would be returned, but Cavern Lake would not. If you want to change this behavior, check the box labeled Include Partial Matches. This will match partial words.
Make Map
This creates a JPEG or a GeoTIFF version of the current view. The size in pixels can be specified in the dropdown box. Two addional files are also created for use in mapping software. The worldfile specifies the location and spatial resolution of the image. The projection file specifies the map projection and datum of the image. Make Map produces data in geographic (unprojected), WGS84 coordinates.
